Artist Biography

Born in Ottawa, Philippe Croteau is an interdisciplinary artist based in the Outaouais region. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Ottawa. He began his career as an interpretive guide at the National Gallery of Canada before transitioning into a career in administration.

Since completing his artistic training, he has participated in numerous group exhibitions, taught art courses, and remained actively involved in the artistic community. In 2011 and 2012, as an active member of BRAVO-East, he served on the organizing committee for the inaugural edition of Ottawa’s Nuit Blanche, titled Life is Beautiful. Since 2025, he has served as Acting President of the Bureau du regroupement des artistes visuels de l’Ontario (BRAVO).

Working within both conceptual and formalist approaches, his practice explores the complexities of queer identity through two- and three-dimensional works. Issues surrounding homosexual identity, the deconstruction of stereotypes, and the preservation of memory form the critical foundation of his artistic research.

Artist Statement

My practice is rooted in a conceptual and formalist approach, where the artistic gesture becomes a space for reflecting on the sociopolitical tensions that shape both contemporary and historical societies. I view artistic practice as a site of critical inquiry, where formal decisions, process, and materials actively contribute to the creation of meaning. The body occupies a central place in my research, serving as both an anchor and the core of my work. It appears in various forms across both two- and three-dimensional media.

Materiality and the notion of time are fundamental aspects of my practice. They function as meaningful vehicles, carrying symbolic weight and manifesting through the accumulation and repetition of forms, gestures, and processes. These formal strategies evoke specific themes while translating lived experiences through time.

My research focuses on queer identity, understood as a space for questioning dominant norms and power structures. It also addresses growing political instability, the rise of right-wing movements, and the ongoing attacks against the rights of queer communities. Within this context, my work highlights the tensions between visibility and erasure, affirmation and vulnerability.

Ultimately, my practice seeks to reveal spaces of friction where form, material, and gesture become inseparable from content. It offers a nuanced reflection on the conditions of existence, memory, and resistance within contexts defined by instability and transformation.

Biographie de l’artiste

Natif d’Ottawa, Philippe Croteau est un artiste interdisciplinaire établi dans la région de l’Outaouais. Titulaire d’un baccalauréat en arts visuels et d’un baccalauréat en éducation de l’Université d’Ottawa, il a d’abord œuvré à titre de guide-interprète au Musée des beaux-arts du Canada avant d’amorcer une carrière en administration.

Depuis sa formation artistique, il participe à de nombreuses expositions collectives, enseigne des cours d’art et s’implique activement au sein de la communauté artistique. En 2011 et 2012, à titre de membre actif de BRAVO-Est, il a siégé au comité organisateur de la première édition de la Nuit Blanche d’Ottawa, intitulée La vie est belle. Depuis 2025, il occupe le poste de président par intérim du Bureau du regroupement des artistes visuels de l’Ontario (BRAVO).

S’inscrivant dans une démarche à la fois conceptuelle et formaliste, son travail explore les complexités de l’identité queer à travers des œuvres bidimensionnelles et tridimensionnelles. Les enjeux liés à l’identité homosexuelle, à la déconstruction des stéréotypes et à la préservation de la mémoire nourrissent le langage critique de sa recherche plastique.

Démarche artistique

Mon travail s’inscrit dans une démarche conceptuelle et formaliste, où le geste artistique devient un espace de réflexion sur les tensions sociopolitiques qui traversent nos sociétés, tant contemporaines qu’historiques. J’envisage la pratique comme un lieu d’investigation critique, où les choix formels, le processus et les matériaux participent activement à la création de sens des œuvres. De plus, le corps occupe une place centrale dans ma recherche car il agit comme point d’ancrage, voire le noyau de mon travail ; il peut apparaître sous plusieurs formes de façons bidimensionnelles et tridimensionnelles.

La matérialité et la notion du temps sont des aspects critiques de ma pratique. Celles-ci agissent comme vecteurs signifiants, porteurs d’une charge symbolique et se manifestent notamment par l’accumulation et la répétition des formes, des gestes, du processus. Ces stratégies formelles permettent d’évoquer certains thèmes et traduisent des expériences dans une temporalité.

Mes recherches s’articulent autour de l’identité queer, envisagée comme un espace de remise en question des normes et des structures dominantes. Elles abordent également l’instabilité politique croissante, la montée des mouvements de droite et les attaques répétées contre les droits des personnes queers. Dans ce contexte, mon travail met en lumière des tensions entre visibilité et effacement, entre affirmation et vulnérabilité.

Ainsi, ma pratique cherche à faire émerger des zones de friction où forme, matière et geste deviennent indissociables du contenu. Elle propose une réflexion sensible sur les conditions d’existence, de mémoire et de résistance au sein de contextes marqués par l’instabilité et la transformation.
